Peaches on branch

Image Credit: leekris/iStock/Getty Images A perfectly ripe peach can be juicier and sweeter than the world’s best dessert. This can make it hard to believe that this delectable fruit is both low in calories and high in nutrients – but it is. The calorie content makes it a perfect choice as a small snack or a sweet topping on yogurt.

Calorie Count

Just like with all foods, portion size matters. Calories in a peach vary based on the overall size of the fruit. A peach that is 2 3/4 inches in diameter has approximately 68 calories and 17 grams of carbohydrates. A smaller peach – 2 1/2 inches in diameter – contains only 51 calories and 13 grams of carbohydrates.

Nutrient Considerations

The low-calorie aspect of peaches is appealing, but what really makes them a powerful health food is the nutrients they are packed with. Peaches are a good source of fiber – 2.2 grams in a medium peach – and a great source of vitamin C. To maximize the sweetness and vitamin C benefit, choose a peach with a firm, fuzzy skin that yields to gentle pressure when ripe.
